Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles used at DC Acupuncture are of superior quality, and the technique employed by acupuncturist Bronwyn Clark minimizes the sensation felt by patients. These sterile needles are comparable in size to two strands of your hair, and you may feel a momentary ache or tingling sensation. This 11 month old glances back over her shoulder but never minds the sensation of the needle on her back.
What can I expect during treatment sessions?
Your first appointment will last over an hour, and consists of a general health history, and a discussion about how acupuncture can address your specific concerns and your overall well-being. An acupuncture treatment catered to your unique needs will follow. Subsequent visits will last approximately fifty minutes.
Before needling, you may enjoy other therapeutic techniques such as cupping, infrared heat therapy, acupressure, or topical warming gel to alleviate aches and pains.
How many treatments will be necessary before I see a change in my symptoms?
The duration of treatments is specific to an individual's goals and his or her unique constitution, and this will be discussed during your initial treatment. Generally speaking, patients are encouraged to receive regular treatments while symptoms are shifting, often over the course of one month. Less frequent visits, perhaps monthly or seasonally, may be necessary to maintain the desired changes.
Another rule of thumb is that longer-standing symptoms take longer to resolve. If you receive treatment when you feel a cold coming on, one or two treatments may limit the duration of the cold and results are seen immediately. By contrast, if you’ve suffered from back pain or seasonal allergies for many years, multiple sessions over the course of many weeks may be necessary to achieve long term relief. However, even with long-standing symptoms, many patients experience dramatic results after only one or two treatments.
