Frequently Asked Questions:

Does acupuncture hurt?

Sensations vary from person to person with some clients feeling a dull, momentary ache or tingling sensation.  Patients generally know when each point is effectively stimulated and the accompanying sensation is often desirable.  This 11 month old  glances  back over  her shoulder but never flinches.

Can Acupuncture help with my…?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has endorsed acupuncture treatment for over 40 conditions.  Although the list of symptoms and diseases for which acupuncture can effectively treat is quite extensive, some conditions that are commonly treated today include:

  • Chronic and acute pain
  • Addictions (including alcoholism and cigarette cessation)
  • Allergies
  • Digestive Disorders
  • Depression and Anxiety (and other emotional or mental disorders)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Gynecological problems including Infertility
  • Headaches (& Migraines)
  • Respiratory symptoms
  • Sleep Problems
  • Common cold or flu
  • Weight Problems
  • Stress

What can I expect during treatment sessions?

Your first appointment will last approximately 1.5 hours, and consists of a general health history, and a discussion about how acupuncture can address your specific concerns and your overall well-being.  An acupuncture treatment catered to your unique needs will follow. Subsequent visits will last approximately one hour.

How many treatments will be necessary before I see a change in my symptoms?

The duration of treatments is specific to an individual's goals and his  or her unique constitution, and this will be discussed during your initial treatment.  Generally speaking, patients are encouraged to receive weekly treatments while symptoms are shifting, often over the course of one or two months. Less frequent visits, perhaps monthly or seasonal, may be necessary to maintain the desired changes.

Another rule of thumb is that longer standing symptoms take longer to resolve.  If you receive treatment when you feel a cold coming on, one or two treatments may limit the duration of the cold and results are seen immediately.  By contrast, if you’ve suffered from back pain or seasonal allergies for many years, multiple sessions over the course of many weeks may be necessary to achieve long term relief.  However, even with longstanding symptoms, many patients experience dramatic results after only one or two treatments.
